Thorn Park on Kangaroo Island

Thorn Park On The Island is a contemporary three bed-roomed beach house on the hill, over looking the town and harbour of Penneshaw on Kangaroo Island.

The house is light and bright with large windows facing north and they take in the expansive views of the surrounding countryside, town ship and sea. It has been furnished with high quality furniture and art works, yet is relaxed and comfortable.

The large open plan sitting/dining room has flat screen television, video player, DVD player, CD player and a large selection of books, DVD’s and games. There is a large deck overlooking the sea and small harbour where the ferry from the mainland arrives.

The main bedroom has a king-sized bed and direct access to the bathroom. The other two bedrooms have queen-sized beds (one can be twinned). The house has two reverse cycle split system air-conditioners. There are also additional heaters if needed.

The kitchen is equipped with microwave oven, dish washer, European fan forced electric oven and ceramic cook tops. There is a full selection of pots and pans and most equipment needed to prepare and cook with. The pantry cupboard has all herbs, spices, oils, flours etc. We only ask that as items are used up, they be replaced. The local supermarket and bottle shop in the village is extremely good and is open 8am to 8 pm daily.

There is a laundry with a front load washer/dryer and there is a clothes line.

The deck houses a large gas kettle style BBQ and a gas heater. A large market umbrella provides shelter on a hot day. There is also a grassed area overlooking the ocean.

The house will be prepared for your arrival with the correct number of beds made up, and bath towels provided. The house is equipped with woolen & cotton blankets, doonas and very good beds and pillows. All linen is provided, so all you’d need to take would be beach towels.

Penneshaw has mains water (it is the only area in South Australia serviced with desalinated water). The house is also on rainwater.

Thorn Park On The Island is suited to groups of two to six, children are welcome and the property is safe for families.

About Kangaroo Island

Kangaroo Island lies close to the South Australian mainland. The Island is renowned for its wild life and natural beauty, from the rugged wild cliffs of the south coast, to the extensive national parks and conservation areas to the protected sandy bays of the north coast. The south coast features seal colonies, sculptured rock formations, Flinders Chase National Park and great bushwalking. The north coast offers good fishing, safe swimming and spectacular views. Thorn Park On The Island is situated on the north coast, on the hill above the little village of Penneshaw. Hog Bay Beach is just below the house and is a pretty little bay with protected waters which mean it is safe for children and the sea is usually calm.

Kangaroo Island is known for its flora and fauna - we have our own cheeky Magpie, a family of Tammar Wallabies, the occasional Short Beaked Echidna, Brushtail Possum and numerous native birds including Scarlet robins, Magnificent Blue Wrens. The rare Glossy Black Cockatoo often flies past whilst feeding on the Casuarina seeds.  A very large Penguin colony is nearby and you need to drive carefully at night as they often stroll up the road! There are great bush walks, wildflowers in the spring and fish for the catching.

The Island has several art galleries, numerous conservation parks, and an emerging wine industry with several cellar doors, some of whom serve food as well. There is a sheep dairy that makes wonderful cheeses and yogurts. The island has the last remaining hives of Ligurian Bees and their honey is of exceptional quality.  Honey and honey products are to be found at Clifford’s Honey farm and Island Beehive. The Island also produces some of the state’s best free range eggs and poultry. For those who do not want to fish, fresh seafood and fish are obtainable from several venues in Kingscote, including Ferguson Australia, the island largest processor of fresh lobster. Fresh water marron is available at Andermel Marron near Parndana who also produce wine and have an exceptional Farm Café.

Penneshaw is an attractive seaside village situated on the north east coast of the island. The area is known as the Dudley Peninsular and is the closest tow to the mainland. The Vehicular Ferries run by Sealink arrive and depart from the little harbour several times a day. Nearby Christmas Cove offers safe anchorage for fishing boats and yachts. The village is well served by a modern supermarket and bottle shop, several hotels, a corner store & licensed café, a fuel/hardware/fishing store, a post office and business centre as well as several great eating places.
